Tanmay Bhat (born 23 June 1990) is an Indian YouTuber, comedian, writer and producer known for the Tanmay Bhat YouTube channel.[1] He is a co-founder of the comedy collective All India Bakchod (AIB).[2] His channel, which features vlogs, comedy sketches, reaction videos and gaming streams, had over 5.4 million subscribers and 2.6 billion views as of September 2026.[3]
Early life and education
Tanmay Arun Bhat was born on 23 June 1990 in Bombay (now Mumbai), Maharashtra, to a Kannada Brahmin family. He studied at the Cosmopolitan Education Society and the Sheth Chunilal Damodardas Barfiwala High School in Andheri, and later at R. D. National College and Jai Hind College, where he completed a bachelor's degree in advertising. While at R. D. National College, he started Cutting Chai Fest, a student-led media festival.[4]
Career
Bhat began his career writing for television. He debuted with UTV Bindass' flagship show Hass Ley India, wrote for MTV India's Wassup and Nachle Ve with Saroj Khan, and did story, screenplay and dialogue writing for Disney India's daily comedies Kya Mast Hai Life and NDTV Imagine's Oye! It's Friday! with Farhan Akhtar. He started performing stand-up comedy around the same time and won the Weirdass Ham-ateur Night, a national comic hunt organised by Vir Das, in 2009.[5]
He co-founded All India Bakchod (AIB) as a YouTube comedy collective with Gursimran Khamba. The group filmed sketches and performed stand-up comedy, and by early 2015 it had grown into a creative agency producing branded content, known for its "Honest Indian..." satirical sketches.[6] In 2018, Bhat was a judge on season 1 of Comicstaan, a stand-up comedy competition broadcast on Amazon Prime Video. In October 2018 he stepped away from AIB after allegations of workplace harassment surfaced against a colleague, and Amazon later dropped him from the second season of Comicstaan.[7]
In mid-2019 Bhat started his solo YouTube channel "Tanmay Bhat", posting vlogs, comedy sketches, reaction videos and video essays, and streaming games such as PUBG Mobile and Among Us. He also launched a second channel, "Honestly by Tanmay Bhat", focused on learning streams and videos featuring experts on various topics. In January 2020, he teamed up with YouTuber Saiman Says for "TreeMathon 2020", an 8-hour live stream with several comedians raising funds to plant trees in response to the deforestation drive at Aarey Milk Colony. In April 2020, he and Kaneez Surka hosted an 8-hour live stream over two days, raising over Rs 1.7 million for charities fighting the COVID-19 pandemic.[8]
