Village Cooking Channel (VCC) is an Indian Tamil language YouTube cooking channel run by a family in Chinna Veeramangalam, Pudukottai district, Tamil Nadu, known for cooking traditional village food in open fields.[1] Launched in 2018, the channel is led by grandfather M. Periyathambi along with his grandsons and grandnephews, and it had about 30.1 million subscribers and 9.3 billion views as of January 2026.[2] It became the first Tamil channel on YouTube to receive the Diamond Play Button after crossing 10 million subscribers.[3]
Early life and education
The channel is run by family members: brothers V. Subramanian, V. Ayyanar and V. Murugesan, their cousin T. Muthumanickam, their brother in law G. Tamilselvan, led by their grandfather and former caterer M. Periyathambi, all from Chinna Veeramangalam in Pudukottai district. The family depended on rainfed agriculture, which gave them work for only six months of the year.[4] Subramanian, an MPhil scholar in Commerce who sold his freelance design website in 2016, and his cousins were preparing to move abroad for work when they decided to try their luck with a YouTube channel instead.[5]
Career
The channel was launched in 2018 as a timepass activity, with the family cooking traditional South Indian foods and other recipes in agricultural fields using traditional cooking methods and vessels.[6] The videos are opened by the team's greeting "Ellarum vaango" in the local dialect, which became one of the channel's recognisable catchphrases.[7]
The channel gained a pan India audience after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi appeared in a January 2021 video cooking kalaan biryani (mushroom biryani) with the family.[8] Daily subscriber additions jumped from about 10,000 to between 30,000 and 40,000 after the video went viral.[9] The team donated Rs 10 lakh from their earnings to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister's Public Relief Fund to aid the fight against COVID-19.[10]
Personal life
The food cooked for the videos is served to friends, relatives and people in the village, and during the pandemic lockdowns the family began serving it at old age homes and orphanages.[11]
