Kanan Singh Gill (born 24 December 1989), known as Kanan Gill, is an Indian comedian, actor and YouTuber known for the Kanan Gill YouTube channel.[1] He won the Punch Line Bangalore Competition and is known for the YouTube series Pretentious Movie Reviews with fellow comedian Biswa Kalyan Rath. His channel had over 750,000 subscribers as of September 2026.[2]

Early life and education

Gill was born on 24 December 1989 in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, to a Sikh family, and spent his early years in Dehradun and Delhi before moving to Bengaluru. His father Charanjit Singh Gill was an officer with the Indian Army and later the principal of Rashtriya Military School, Bangalore. He studied at Ahlcon Public School in New Delhi and The Frank Anthony Public School in Bengaluru, and pursued a B.E. degree in Computer Science at MS Ramaiah Institute of Technology. In college he was part of a band, where he became the lead singer after starting to write humorous songs.[3]

Career

After graduating, Gill worked as a software engineer at Exeter Group Inc. for three years. While working, he performed at open mics, won the Punch Line Bangalore competition and then a competition at the Comedy Store in Mumbai, after which he quit his engineering job to pursue comedy.[4]

Gill and Biswa Kalyan Rath created Pretentious Movie Reviews, a YouTube series in which they review flawed Bollywood films in comic sketches. Their first review was of the film Gunda, followed by films such as Jaani Dushman, Prem Aggan and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, and the series went viral.[5]

In 2017 he released his one-hour comedy special Keep It Real on Amazon Prime Video and made his film debut in Noor alongside Sonakshi Sinha. He was a judge on Comicstaan, the Amazon Prime Video comedy reality show, in 2018. His later work includes the Netflix special Yours Sincerely, the Prime Video series Aachaar & Co, a starring role in the 2023 Netflix film Christmas as Usual, and the special Is This It? released on YouTube in 2024.[6][7]

Gill's debut novel Acts of God, a comic science fiction work, was published by HarperCollins in 2024.[8] He has described writing the book, which grew from a short story he wrote in 2016, as more freeing than stand-up comedy.[9]
