Saurav Das (born 28 January 2000) is an Indian independent investigative journalist, Right to Information (RTI) activist and the Chief Spokesperson of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), a youth-led protest movement that rose to prominence in 2026 over issues of examination integrity and student rights.[1]
Early life and education
Das was born in New Delhi. He completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism and Mass Communication from Amity University, Noida, between 2016 and 2019. During his student years he began filing RTI applications, starting in 2017 at the age of 18. He briefly interned with the NDTV news desk in New Delhi from December 2018 to January 2019.[2][3]
Career
Das began working as an independent journalist in 2020. His reporting has focused on law, governance, the judiciary, crime and institutional transparency. His articles have been published in The Caravan, Article 14, Al Jazeera, The Wire, The Hindu, New Lines Magazine and other outlets. He has also written a recurring column for Frontline.
He has used litigation to pursue access to information. During the COVID-19 pandemic, one of his petitions was associated with efforts that led the Central Information Commission to expedite certain appeals. Das has received support from the Pulitzer Center for investigative work on judicial and policing accountability and was listed among the â30 Young Indians Transforming the Worldâs Largest Electionsâ by the Young India Foundation in 2024.
He is the co-founder of Climate Action Front, an organisation concerned with climate compliance, sustainability and related policy issues. As of 2026 he was writing his first book, Complicit Silence: The Courtâs Role in Indiaâs Quiet Suffering, which examines the relationship between the judiciary and democratic accountability through individual cases.
In November 2025 Das took part in anti-pollution protests held at India Gate in Delhi.[4][5]
Cockroach Janta Party
In June 2026 the Cockroach Janta Party, a movement that originated as a satirical online response to remarks attributed to the Chief Justice of India and later focused on the NEET-UG paper-leak controversy and related student demands, appointed Das as its Chief Spokesperson. The organisation simultaneously named Vijeta Dahiya and Ashutosh Ranka as spokespersons.[6]
In this role Das has conducted media briefings, publicly articulated the groupâs demands including the resignation of the Union Education Ministerâand represented CJP in discussions with central government officials. He was among the representatives who met Union Minister JP Nadda during the protests at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi in July 2026.[7]
