Arun Rupesh Maini, known online as MrWhosetheboss, is a British technology YouTuber whose polished smartphone reviews and ambitious builds have made him one of the biggest tech creators in the world, with over 22 million subscribers.[1]
Born 24 October 1995 in Nottingham, England, into an Indian family, he started his channel at 14 in 2011, turned down a corporate career at PwC to do YouTube full-time, and in 2024 set a Guinness World Record with a giant working iPhone replica.[2]
Early life and education
Maini was born on 24 October 1995 in Nottingham, England, to Indian parents.[3]
He studied economics at the University of Warwick, graduating with first-class honours in 2017, and turned down a job offer from the accounting firm PwC to pursue YouTube instead.[4]
Career
Starting out
Maini launched MrWhosetheboss in April 2011 at the age of 14, posting his first videos about the Android phone his brother had given him while still in school.[5]
For years he uploaded alongside his studies, gradually refining a review style built on cinematic visuals, clear verdicts and an everyman tone that made flagship phones feel understandable.[6]
By 2021 the channel had become a full-scale operation. He signed with the creator company Night Media that year, and he was winning back-to-back Streamy Awards for technology content in 2021 and 2022.[7][8][9]
He crossed 10 million subscribers in 2022, earning YouTube's Diamond Play Button, and kept climbing toward the top tier of global tech creators.[10]
Guinness World Record
In September 2024 Maini teamed up with DIYPerks' Matthew Perks to build the world's largest scaled-up working smartphone: a 2.054-metre (6.74 ft) fully functional replica of the iPhone 15 Pro Max.[11]
The giant phone could genuinely be used, with a working touchscreen, camera and charging, and the build was verified on site by Guinness World Records.[12]
The project drew coverage across Indian and international media, with outlets noting the Indian-origin creator behind one of tech YouTube's most ambitious builds.[13]
Around the same time his subscriber count surpassed even Apple's official channel, a symbolic milestone for an independent reviewer.[14]
Review style and influence
Maini's reviews stand out for their production values: cinematic b-roll, detailed camera comparisons and long-term testing, a polish that has pushed the whole tech-review genre to raise its game.[15]
He built his reputation on flagship smartphone coverage, but his catalogue spans the full gadget spectrum, from foldables and wearables to the occasional wildly ambitious project video.[16]
His verdicts carry real commercial weight: manufacturers know that a Maini review, good or bad, will be seen by tens of millions of potential buyers.[17]
Despite the scale, he has kept the channel's tone approachable. The format is still, at heart, one enthusiast explaining phones to another, just with far better lighting than in 2011.[18]
Personal life
Maini married Dhrisha in June 2024, sharing the news with his audience in his characteristically low-key style.[19]
The couple announced in 2026 that they were expecting their first child, due in August 2026.[20]
He continues to run one of the most-watched tech channels on YouTube, with more than 7 billion lifetime views.[21]
