Bill Gates (born 28 October 1955) is an American entrepreneur and philanthropist. He is the co-founder of Microsoft, the software company he started in 1975 with his childhood friend Paul Allen.[1][2]
Early life and education
Gates was born William Henry Gates III on 28 October 1955 in Seattle, Washington. He developed an early interest in computing at Seattle's Lakeside School, where he wrote his first software program.[1] He enrolled at Harvard College in 1973 but dropped out two years later to co-found Microsoft with Paul Allen.[1]
Career
Gates and Allen founded Microsoft in 1975 to develop software for the Altair 8800 microcomputer. Microsoft's MS-DOS operating system, licensed to IBM for its personal computer in 1981, made the company dominant in PC software, followed by the success of Microsoft Windows.[1] After Microsoft's 1986 IPO, Gates became the world's then-youngest billionaire at age 31, and Forbes ranked him the world's wealthiest person for 18 of the 24 years between 1995 and 2017.[1] He stepped down as CEO in 2000 and as chairman in 2014 to focus on philanthropy through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, one of the world's largest private charitable foundations.[1][3][4]
Personal life
Gates was married to Melinda French Gates from 1994 until their divorce in 2021. They have three children.[1]
