With over a million subscribers, she has expanded beyond YouTube into singing, acting, fashion design and advocacy for girls' education.[2]
Early life and education
Kumar was born and raised in New Delhi.[3]
She studied economics at Shri Ram College of Commerce in Delhi, starting her channel in September 2014 while still a student.[4]
A college exchange programme took her to Turkey, where she filmed a summer lookbook on the streets of Istanbul, the video that became her first upload and the start of her channel.[5]
Career
Early fashion videos
Kumar started her channel in 2014 at the age of 19, and within a few years she was one of India's most popular content creators.[6]
Her tone was conversational and relatable rather than aspirational, and the channel grew steadily as she posted through college and beyond.[7]
Brand work followed, with endorsements including Lifestyle stores and Samsung India as her audience grew into the millions of monthly views.[8]
Mainstream recognition
In 2018–19 she collected a string of awards: Cosmopolitan India's Best Vlog and Best Lifestyle Blogger, and Instagram's Fashion Account of the Year and Instagrammer of the Year.[9]
As her work expanded from weekly videos into campaigns, shoots and appearances, she learned to delegate to a team and focus on the creative work.[10]
Her "Mom and Me" series with her mother, Anjali Kumar, a gynaecologist, became one of her most-loved formats, drawing viewers who came for fashion and stayed for the family warmth.[11]
She has also been open about her relationship with Shaayak Bhattacharya, folding couple vlogging into her channel in a way she describes as honest rather than performative.[12]
Music, acting and advocacy
Kumar has released original songs including "Aisi Hun", "Khali Khali" and "Destiny", writing "Khali Khali" in about thirty minutes on a ukulele during lockdown isolation.[13]
"Aisi Hun" was released through YouTube's Creators for Change programme in partnership with the Michelle Obama Foundation, supporting girls' education in India.[14]
She has acted as well, playing the lead role in the digital series "Engineering Girls", and launched a clothing line in collaboration with Stalk Buy Love.[15]
Her track "Destiny", released as an independent single, showed a more personal side. She has said the song was about trusting the timing of her own journey.[16]
Off camera she has worked with NGOs on women's issues and sanitation, and she says she wants her content to leave young viewers more confident than it found them.[17]
