History

Classplus was founded in 2018 by Mukul Rustagi and Bhaswat Agarwal, who were friends from their coaching days while preparing for the IIT-JEE. The company was initially known as XPrep. It began as a B2B platform designed to help traditional coaching institutes and individual tutors digitise their operations and create their own online presence, often described as a “Shopify for teachers”.[1]

The platform gained significant traction during the COVID-19 pandemic as offline coaching centres shifted online. Over time, Classplus expanded from serving coaching institutes to supporting individual content creators across subjects such as academic coaching, competitive exams, skill development, yoga, and other categories.[2]

In later years the company also expanded into test preparation through investments and acquisitions, notably acquiring a controlling stake in Testbook in 2022.[3]

Products and services

Classplus offers a white-label solution that allows educators to launch their own branded Android and iOS apps. Key features include:

  • Live and recorded classes
  • Course creation and content management
  • Online assessments and quizzes
  • Fee collection and payment gateway
  • Student and parent communication tools
  • Analytics and CRM

The company has claimed to serve over 1 lakh educators and coaching institutes across more than 1,100–3,000 cities, primarily in India, with additional presence in the Middle East and Southeast Asia. Educators on the platform have reportedly generated hundreds of crores in revenue through their apps.[4]

Funding

Classplus has raised approximately $158–160 million in funding. Major rounds include:

  • Series C (June 2021): $65 million led by Tiger Global and GSV Ventures at a valuation of over $250 million.
  • Series D (March 2022): $70 million co-led by Alpha Wave Global and Tiger Global at a valuation of approximately $570–600 million.

Notable investors include Tiger Global, Alpha Wave Global, Blume Ventures, Peak XV Partners (formerly Sequoia Surge), RTP Global, GSV Ventures, Times Internet, and others.[5]
