Early life and education

Fischbach was born on 28 June 1989 in Honolulu, Hawaii, and was raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he grew up as a self-described awkward kid who found his voice performing for a camera.[3] He graduated from Milford High School and enrolled at the University of Cincinnati to study engineering, but the pull of making videos proved stronger than the degree — he dropped out to bet everything on YouTube.[4] It was a gamble that looked reckless at the time and obvious in hindsight.

Career

Fischbach started uploading in 2012, and his career caught fire through Let's Plays of horror games — first Amnesia: The Dark Descent, then the Five Nights at Freddy's series, where his theatrical screaming and genuine love of the genre turned him into the undisputed king of YouTube horror.[5] But he never wanted to be just a gamer. He began experimenting with ambitious interactive storytelling, releasing the choose-your-own-adventure specials A Date with Markiplier and A Heist with Markiplier, where viewers clicked their way through branching narratives.[6]

The experiment scaled up dramatically with In Space with Markiplier, a full YouTube Originals production released in April 2022 and co-produced with Rooster Teeth Studios — a sprawling sci-fi adventure with multiple endings that proved a YouTuber could run a production like a television studio.[7] He also starred in the thriller series The Edge of Sleep and built a podcasting audience alongside his video empire.[8]

In October 2018 he teamed up with his close friend Jacksepticeye to launch Cloak, a gamer-focused athleisure brand built on ethically produced, gender-neutral clothing in sizes S to 3X.[9] The launch was not all smooth sailing — fans balked at the prices and minimalist designs, and the backlash grew loud enough that even PewDiePie weighed in to defend the pricing, citing his own experience running the Tsuki brand, while critics like Keemstar accused the pair of exploiting their audience.[10]

His boldest move came in April 2023, when Deadline revealed he would write, direct, star in and self-finance a feature-film adaptation of David Szymanski's indie horror game Iron Lung, with production based in Austin, Texas.[11] He had simply messaged the game's creator to ask permission, and the two developed the script together.[12] The gamble paid off spectacularly: Iron Lung opened theatrically on 30 January 2026 and grossed more than 50 million US dollars worldwide on a self-financed budget of roughly 4 million, with a YouTube-exclusive purchase release following on 31 May 2026.[13] Afterwards he publicly called out Hollywood for ignoring YouTubers' theatrical potential, arguing the industry had underestimated creators at its own peril.[14] The year kept delivering: Forbes' 2026 Top Creators list placed him at number four with an estimated 38 million dollars in earnings and 76.8 million followers across platforms.[15]
