Dream, known publicly only by his first name Clay, is an American YouTuber famous for his Minecraft videos, particularly the "Minecraft Manhunt" series and the Dream SMP roleplay server.

With over 30 million subscribers, he is one of the most-watched Minecraft creators in the platform's history, and for years one of its most mysterious, performing behind a smiley-face mask before revealing his face in 2022.

Early life and education

Dream has kept his personal life largely private; his surname and date of birth are not public, and he built his entire public persona around the masked "Dream" identity.

He began uploading Minecraft videos in 2019, building his popularity through his impressive gaming skills.

The smiley-face mask became his trademark, letting him become one of gaming's most recognisable figures without ever showing his face.

For years, speculation about what he looked like was itself a driver of his fame.

Career

Minecraft Manhunt and the Dream SMP

Dream's signature series, "Minecraft Manhunt", pits him against a team of friends trying to stop him from beating the game, a simple concept executed with such skill and tension that episodes regularly drew tens of millions of views.

He also founded the Dream SMP with GeorgeNotFound in 2020, an invite-only roleplay server whose improvised storylines, starring creators such as TommyInnit, became some of the most-watched content in the game's history.

The combination made him the face of Minecraft's resurgence on YouTube, with Manhunt episodes and Dream SMP storylines drawing some of the largest audiences in the game's history.

Speedrun controversy

In late 2020 a Minecraft speedrun moderation team ruled that the odds in several of Dream's record-setting runs were too unlikely to have occurred without modification.

Dream initially denied cheating and published a long rebuttal, but in May 2021 he admitted that an undisclosed mod had raised his odds during the runs in question, while maintaining it was accidental.

The episode remains one of the most debated controversies in Minecraft history, though it did little to dent his audience growth.

The moderation team later published its own response to his admission, standing by its statistical analysis while the community argued over whether the punishment fit.

Face reveal

On 2 October 2022 Dream finally revealed his face in a video that drew more than 16 million views, saying he wanted to meet his friends in person and begin making real-world content.

The video opened with him joking that his real name, Clay, had been an open secret for years; the reveal was about the face, not the name.

It was one of the biggest events in YouTube history, trending worldwide within hours, but the attention quickly turned hostile, with Dream facing intense scrutiny and mockery over his appearance.

He later deleted the face-reveal video and returned to the masked persona, saying the hate had made the experiment not worth it, a cautionary tale about the costs of internet fame.

Legacy

Whether masked or unmasked, Dream remains one of the most significant creators in Minecraft history.
