Dhruv Rathee (October 8, 1994) is an Indian YouTuber and political commentator based in Germany, widely regarded as one of India's most influential digital voices. Known for his research-heavy explainer videos on politics, the environment and social issues, he built one of the largest political commentary audiences in the world from his desk in Berlin, with 32 million+ subscribers on his main YouTube channel as of September 2026.[1] His fact-driven style — animations, press clippings and sourced data woven into plain-spoken Hindi — made him a fixture of India's national conversation, earning him a place on TIME magazine's Next Generation Leaders list in 2023.[2]
Early life and education
Dhruv Rathee was born on 8 October 1994 in Rohtak, Haryana, where he completed his schooling.[3] At 17 he moved to Germany for higher education, enrolling at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). There he earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, followed by a master's degree in renewable energy from the same institution.[4] He continues to live in Germany and married his long-time partner Juli Lbr — often credited as the cinematographer on his travel videos — in Vienna in November 2021.[5]
Career
Rathee launched his YouTube channel in 2013, posting light travel and technology clips while studying in Germany.[6] Within a year his focus swung sharply towards political commentary, and he began producing long-form explainer videos that broke down complex policy and current-affairs topics into simple, evidence-backed narratives. He has described his aim as making complicated issues understandable — "present things as simply as possible and break down complex issues in simple words."[7] His signature format — calm narration over motion graphics, official documents and news footage — cut through the noise of India's partisan media landscape and drew a young audience hungry for independent analysis.
Rathee's influence scaled rapidly through the late 2010s and early 2020s. His video "Is India Becoming a Dictatorship?" released ahead of the 2024 general election became one of the most discussed pieces of political content in the country that year, and news outlets documented how political YouTubers led by Rathee unsettled the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party during the campaign, with his subscriber count nearing 21 million even then — just shy of Prime Minister Modi's own channel.[8] Al Jazeera profiled him as having gone "from Modi fan to Indian PM's most formidable critic," noting that his videos routinely pull tens of millions of views.[9]
Beyond the main channel, Rathee diversified into travel vlogging (Dhruv Rathee Vlogs, launched 2020), short-form content (Dhruv Rathee Shorts), and later five dubbed channels in regional Indian languages, widening his reach beyond Hindi-speaking audiences. He collaborated with Netflix India on Decode with Dhruv, a series unpacking the pop culture around popular films and shows, and with Deutsche Welle on DW Travel; he also hosts the Spotify podcast Maha Bharat with Dhruv Rathee.[10]
In October 2023, Rathee was named to TIME magazine's Next Generation Leaders list, recognised for his fact-checking work and educational content — at the time his channel had crossed 13 million subscribers and 500 videos.[11] He has also picked up YouTube's Silver, Gold and Diamond play buttons over the years.
Controversies
Rathee's sharp criticism of the ruling establishment has repeatedly drawn legal and political pushback. In July 2024, a Delhi court summoned him in a defamation suit filed by Mumbai BJP spokesperson Suresh Karamshi Nakhua over a video titled "My Reply to Godi Youtubers", in which Nakhua alleged he was labelled a "violent and abusive" troll; the case, in which the video had drawn over 24 million views, continued into 2025 proceedings.[12][13] The episode followed his central role in the digital battle around the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, where his videos challenging the BJP's narrative were credited with giving the ruling party "sleepless nights".[14]
